LA Weekly's Description

Opened in 1986 by collector Billy Shire, known as the Peggy Guggenheim of lowbrow art, this Eastside art gallery brought to prominence the key artists of what is arguably the most important art movement to come out of California in the past few decades. Known as among the most hip galleries in town, it specializes in pop art, street art and surrealism. You can also head next door to the gift shop, the fittingly bizarre Soap Plant/Wacko, for strange and wonderful memorabilia.

Billy Shire opened this gallery in 1986. Its first location was above the Soap Plant/Wacko on Melrose. He has described their philosophy by saying, "Art should be by the people and for the people.”
