LA Weekly's Description

Tucked away in a secluded canyon in the Los Feliz-area park beckons the old Griffith Park Zoo, a quiet haven of peace and high-quality strangeness. The zoo was built in 1912, and closed down in 1966 when the L.A. Zoo opened its doors. Still, the area is conducive to picnics, reading, yoga or meditation, with the sounds of birds and a small stream trickling nearby.

Hike around the park and spot the Hollywood Sign, which can be seen from various points on the hiking trail.

For all those road runners out there, consider trail running here. It will train all the tiny stabilizer muscles in your lower legs that road running just won’t hit.

From the sublime parking to old zoo to the Merry-Go-Round (which has been operating since 1937), the largest urban park in America has been voted Best Of LA many times... Also perfect for picnics!

Griffith Park, at 4,014 acres of land, is the largest municipal park in the nation

Vista Del Valle Drive is a road on the southeast corner that is now closed to motor vehicles. This is a fantastic bike route that leads to a lookout to LA, Santa Monica and even the ocean on clear day
