Description

LA Weekly's Description

Located in the basement of the Townhouse, the oldest bar in Venice, Del Monte Speakeasy served as an actual speakeasy during Prohibition. Now the burlesque-inspired bar and music venue more closely resembles a dance party, with DJs spinning everything from rap to reggae five to seven nights a week. The drinks are stiff, the bartenders are friendly, and the cover is usually 10 bucks or less.

Merchant's Description

Established in 1915, Townhouse is the oldest bar in Venice and one of the oldest bars in the Los Angeles area. Townhouse's live entertainment basement, The Del Monte Speakeasy, was a true speakeasy during Prohibition and a night-life nucleus, serving many nefarious and infamous characters of the day, masked cleverly by Menotti's grocery store above. Today both floors serve hand-crafted cocktails from the golden age of drinking with classic bartending techniques and knowhow, and offer a fine library of world-class spirits, beer, and wine. The Del Monte Speakeasy features the crème de la crème of live entertainment five to seven nights a week including everything from live music, djs, comedy and burlesque.

This fab underground hotspot was a real speakeasy during the Prohibition era. Originally hidden under a grocery store, smugglers would sneak booze in via tunnels and boats!

Turns into a club at 10pm which totally sucks. Don't call it a speakeasy if it turns into a club,

Cute place, watch your step going down stairs.

very cool vibe - an odd smell going downstairs but youll get used to it - music was great!
