LA Weekly's Description

Known for its famous French dip, Cole's is in the heart of downtown, next to The Association. One of the oldest bars in the city, it occupies the ground floor of the original Pacific Electric building, and is home to the Varnish, a hidden, private bar of sorts, serving high-end classic cocktails. Cozy up on Cole's cushy red booths and order one of their many famed sandwiches and cold pints.

Check out Varnish, a speakeasy accessible through the back of the restaurant, for old-fashioned libations.

People can’t get enough of the lively atmosphere, friendly service, reasonably priced menu and, of course, its legendary French dip sandwich. Just follow the neon sign to au jus heaven.

Cole's has been in the Pacific Electric Building since 1908! It may cost a bit more, but don't hesitate to add cheese. And, please, taste the hot mustard first.
