Like a movie set, like a stage set, like a fantasy with tapestry costumes and professional lighting, the Loring Pasta Bar is inarguably one of the prettiest restaurants in the history of Twin Cities dining. Two rooms: one a long grotto of a bar made of undulating, Gaudi-like writhing snakes of brick; the other, a three-story soaring cathedral of post-Industrial Revolution romance. The food isn't much, since this was designed as a cheap, fun restaurant for penny-pinching University of Minnesota types. But put a bottle of wine on the table, and baby, Nicole Kidman never had a prettier dinner.
You might've heard of his son -- a man named Jimmy who teamed up with another man named Terry, the rest being R&B history -- but Cornbread Harris i...
Service was good, food was good -- but portions were small. My husband ordered the small plate of a New York Steak, which was supposed to be 10 ounces, but was more like six ounces. So order the full-size portion.
We came expecting to hear jazz. There was a solo sax player, playing jazz standards in a slow, rubato style. Eventually he was joined by a guitar, bass, and vocalist--and then they did basically contemporary folk. So if the music matters to you, investigate thoroughly before coming.
The decor is delightful - quirky and whimsical. The brickwork looks like Disneyland on LSD
I've never been disappointed by the service or food here! Great eats, lovely atmosphere. Odd story to add to this post though... my friend and I had just ordered our food and were chatting and drinking away. As she had started to put the glass up to her mouth the bottom of it just fell out. LOL! The waitress was baffled.
Kind of expensive, but great food! Eat here, then go to a show at the Varsity!
If Neil Gaiman designed bathrooms instead of works of fantastical fiction, the Loring Pasta Bar's restroom would easily be the cornerstone of his plumbing portfolio. Follow a wavy brick wall into the dimly lit and enchanting (is it weird to call a bathroom enchanting?) room, in which the walls are painted with a creeping vine of flowers and the giant bowl sinks similarly appear to be suspended by a metal vine. The oddly shaped room leads to just as oddly proportioned stalls, adding to the... More »
Appetizers? What a weird concept, when you think about it. They're the foods you eat, um...before you eat. That being the case, it would make the most sense for those tasty before-meal bits to be light and scarce in number. But too often, appetizer means a bottomless pile of chicken wings slathered in ranch dressing or a greasy pile of nachos topped with a mound of sour cream. Don't get us wrong--we love our grease. But when we're looking for a true appetizer we head for the new Loring... More »
