Description

Carrying on the tradition of the much ballyhooed and now-closed Long Wong's on Mill Avenue, the new-ish Long Wong's at the Firehouse has big shoes to fill. The proprietors of the updated version of the venerated Tempe bar and restaurant are hoping to pick up where their predecessors left off. So far, so good. The joint features lots of music (in the form of open mic sessions and nightly shows by local rock, folk, and indie artists) and the famous wings you'll find at other Valley eateries bearing the Long Wong's name. This spot has a certain funky charm, with the walls covered with an eclectic collection of retro concert and movie posters, old license plates, and more than 200 vintage album covers. The patrons are a similarly colorful mix of college students, barflies, and wing-lovers, many of whom get to the place via the nearby light-rail station. A fire station is also down the street, which proves beneficial to drinkers, because whenever a siren blares, anything at the bar is only a buck. Don't try calling 911 from the parking lot, though -- they're on to that.

Tempe's Playboy Manbaby Are a Middle Finger to Hip Music

It's been a good year for Tempe spazz-funk weirdos Playboy Manbaby, which in that time has morphed from an art-punk joke into something more concrete. "We're actually a band," singer Robbie Pfeffer says incredulously. "We practice and make new... More »

Acoustic Duo Revizor Brings Flair to Long Wong's in Tempe

What does emotional heavy metal sound like? Well, believe it or not, it's kind of folky, but mainly acoustic. It's mostly sad, but strangely fanciful and supremely intense. At least that's how Marive... More »

  • 2010 | Best Legacy Bar

The name Long Wong's is legendary, and the wings have little to do with why. The old location on Mill Avenue birthed some of the state's biggest and best bands, including the Gin Blossoms and The Refreshments. Okay, so the new Long Wong's at the Firehouse isn't on the old strip. And, sure, though the owners are the same, the people booking shows are different. There's still some magic in this venue, which claims a piece of the bulldozed bar's history and is committed to the credo that... More »

  • 2003 | BEST VENUE FOR LOCAL ACTS

Long Wong's remains an old faithful, supporting promising bands seven days a week in its delectably cramped 99-person-capacity confines. These days, pop craftsmen Gloritone, noise-core rockers Hot Fought Cold, bluegrass ensemble Busted Hearts and satirical metalheads Steppchild are among the old jangle-pop headquarters' mainstays. Tempe, with its smoking ban and redevelopment goals, may now be roadhouse unfriendly, but Wong's is like a cockroach in the framework -- its devotion to rock 'n'... More »
