When Lola moved from Old South Pearl to Highland, it snatched up what would turn out to be a prime neighborhood corner, giving the space a sexy, Mexican-beach-themed makeover that extends from the kitchen to the basement to the long, enclosed patio. Diners come for coastal Mexican food -- dipping into a seafood-heavy menu that also includes such appetizers as the molten queso fundido and Lola's famous guacamole, made tableside -- but the crowd really packs in for happy hour, when the bar menu runs killer deals on Tecate, tequila and snacks. And in 2011, Lola added a cold bar in a back corner -- with a window to the patio, where there are four prime seats -- where a chef opens oysters, makes ceviche and serves up raw fish. Lola is a prime party place (just about any time you come in, someone is throwing a shower or celebrating a special occasion), but that deck also makes a lovely spot for a solitary drinker to soak up the last of the sun.

Which came first, the chicken or the waffle? There may be a lot of disagreement about how this dish came about, but almost everyone agrees that the unusual combination of sweet and savory is delicious, which is why it's a staple of Southern cuisine. And you'll be heading south across the border -- at least hypothetically -- for Denver's best plate of chicken and waffles, served up during the weekend brunch at Lola. Although the restaurant is inspired by the coastal regions of... More »
Come happy hour, Lola's covered patio fills up fast -- and with good reason. The kitchen serves up an impressive board of bar bites -- including tacos, ceviche and nachos smothered in goat-cheese queso and barbecued pork -- paired with a beverage list whose components range from margaritas to Mexican beer and shots of tequila, all at discounted prices. And while our very favorite entry on the happy-hour offerings may be The Deal -- two chicken tacos and a can of Top Rope,... More »
Lola has always embraced the power of the ocean, turning out coastal Mexican food in a city -- as people will annoyingly remind you -- framed by waves of mountains. But co-owner/executive chef Jamey Fader knows his way around a fish, and he's cast his net far and wide to hook seaworthy creatures that are the prize of his new cold bar, a few yards of counter space tucked into a tight corner on the edge of the dining room overlooking the patio. The four stools facing the cold bar... More »
How do we love Lola? Let us count the ways. We love the history of the building it resides in, an old mortuary that served as the almost-final resting place of Buffalo Bill (he couldn't be buried on Lookout Mountain until after the ground thawed). We love looking out over the city from its deck, heated so that you can enjoy the view year-round. We love the brunch, with the inventive specials that change every weekend. We love the happy-hour deals, when you can grab a great taco for $3. We... More »
This isn't your typical huevos breakfast place. Lola's creative weekend brunch menu -- right now, at least -- includes crawfish and grits, catfish, chicken-fried pork, even a breakfast torta with smoked shrimp, Serrano ham and tomato-jalapeño jelly. And then there are the weekly specials, each one more inventive than the previous week's. The flavor is distinctly Mexican, with an emphasis on coastal cuisine -- and on a sunny day, there's no better beach than Lola's... More »
On Sunday morning, we worship at the church of Lola, which doubles as a coastal Mexican restaurant the rest of the week. Sliding into our pew (make that booth), we give thanks for the basket of homemade breads (occasionally even pseudo-Pop-Tarts!) with which you can start the meal, for a menu that includes not just pancake and egg offerings, but a truly miraculous chicken-fried steak and specials that would tempt even the most religious weight-watchers to stray. And then we wash away a... More »
There was no doubt that Lola had outgrown its original location. It had outgrown the space within a few weeks of Dave Query and chef Jamey Fader opening their little coastal Mexican seafood shack on South Pearl. What was never a sure thing, however, was whether the loyal crowd of regulars, neighbors, brunchers and margarita-suckers would follow Lola to its new home at the edge of Highland last April. Today, though, Lola is living large, because not only were the faithful willing to charge... More »
Saturday night may not have been all right, but Sunday brunch will make everything better -- as long as you eat it at Lola. Seven nights a week, chef Jamey Fader serves up sublime coastal Mexican fare at this South Pearl hot spot, and the margaritas coming out of the bar only add fuel to the fire. But on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lola mellows out a bit, making it a great place to gather with friends or just gather strength for the week ahead. The fortification starts with a killer... I've only been for breakfast and lunch. Highly recommend the chicken and waffles or the pulled pork bennie!

Honestly...Lola has the most AMAZING guac I have ever had! They make it right in front of you and if you are like me you like it hot! Trust me...they make it HOT and delicious!
