The name Local has nothing to do with local food. Chef Tracy Miller wants the best ingredients to create a restaurant that becomes your home away from home -- your local. To accomplish this, she provides diners with a menu of contemporary American dishes in a simple but elegant space. The restaurant, opened in 2003, is housed in the historic Boyd Hotel in Deep Ellum. Each meal is book-ended with a bantam bowl of warm, spiced nuts, an amuse-bouche soup and a cranberry thumbprint mignardise. It's difficult to nail specialties at Local because the offerings are driven by seasonality. However, it's Texas, so it's safe to say that the burger basket made from locally sourced Burgundy Pasture beef is a sure thing – and it's one of Dallas' best burgers.
Valentine's Day is here, which pretty much sucks for everyone. If you've got a special someone, you're guilted into going out and having your wallet gutted by a triple-digit, prix fixe, mediocre meal.... More »

The locavores in Dallas have always had it tough. While Tom Spicer may be pushing the envelope of urban gardening, and farms outside of Dallas deliver great product, their offering can't be described ... More »
Local, the sleek little restaurant in Deep Ellum, opened late in the winter of 2003. It was met with tempered praise from this newspaper, which lauded the elevated simplicity of chef-owner Tracy Miller's modern American cooking, touting her... More »
Our love of mac and cheese is a deep-rooted affair, grown from a seed planted by our parents with a blue box and neon orange cheese powder. Velveeta upped the pre-fab ante, boxing up cheap pasta with ... More »
Is it possible to want to make love to a cauliflower? Well, yeah, there are probably a few websites devoted to the subject -- there usually are -- but even for normal people, Local's amuse bouche, a cauliflower mirepoix, might be worth the risk of serious injury and professional/legal consequences. The only problem is that the small dish of silken, simple puree, spiked with a bit of heavy cream, is too small, especially if you want to take a bath in it, like we did. More »
Maybe it's annoying to say it, but Local is old-school. Real old-school. There are no moose heads on the wall or annoying string quartet playing the Titanic theme on repeat. It's honest. Also, they have small but perfect portions of dishes such as fried green beans and pan-seared Maine lobster cake. Another old-school (and awesome) move by chef Tracy Miller: Hudson Valley foie gras. This isn't a little pâté spread on a tiny cracker: The foie gras is presented whole and seared as... More »
Local is a slowly evolving organism, one that seems to thrive creatively on the cusp of its own extinction. Chef/owner Tracy Miller brought forth her restaurant in 2003, an offshoot of the catering operation she's nurtured in Deep Ellum's classic Boyd Hotel since 1997. Miller opened with the commitment to shepherd and develop Local in deliberately managed increments so as not to outrun her culinary (and financial) headlights. Since that time she has added a sleek yet comfortable wine lounge... More »
There are a lot of good things that can be said about Local, the tiny boutique restaurant that opened in the heart of Deep Ellum in the historic Boyd Hotel, one-time stopover for Bonnie and Clyde, Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter and Blind Lemon Jefferson. One of them is the Sluree, a blend of Rotari, an Italian sparkling wine, and scoops of house-made grapefruit-rosemary sorbet that quickly melt into the fizz. The Sluree is a good source of vitamin C as long as you don't fortify yourself into... More »
Pricey, but this is one place you get what you pay for! Try the filet mignon.
