Description

Fried chicken simply doesn't get any better than this, unless it's paired with waffles. Everything on the soul food menu is homemade and completely addictive, with luscious catfish, red snapper, omelets, greens, mac 'n' cheese, and red velvet cake. Leave the diet at the door.

  • 2011 | Best Soul Food Restaurant

Granted, this isn't exactly front-page news, but the word is out: Lo-Lo's is one of the must-try restaurants in Phoenix. Neighborhood peeps, tourists, fans of the novel, hangover-nursing hipsters, and, really, just about anybody who understands this concept: fried chicken + waffles = Heaven on Earth. We'll be the first to admit that, years ago, when we first heard of this joint, it seemed an odd combo. Once you try it, though, it instantly becomes as obvious as peanut butter and jelly, Oreos... • 2010 | Best Breakfast, South Phoenix

Did somebody say chicken and waffles? Yeah, that'll get us right out of bed. You'll never need to twist our arm to start off the day with Lo-Lo's crispy, otherworldly fried chicken and a hot pile of waffles, but even if we weren't in the mood for that (impossible, honestly), there's still so much to love about this favorite local hangout. Ivan's chorizo and eggs, served with warm flour tortillas, gives a nod to that Southwestern spice that we're hooked on, while steak and eggs with hash... More »

  • 2009 | Best Soul Food

Catch Larry "Lo-Lo" White at a rare moment when his restaurant isn't packed and maybe he'll regale you with stories of all the sports stars who insist on a detour to Lo-Lo's when they're in town for a game. Or just look at all the framed, autographed photos on the walls to get an idea of who's been here -- Muhammad Ali, Charles Barkley, Amar'e Stoudemire, and many more. But, hey, we don't need any celebrity endorsements to get us through the door. The promise of sinking our teeth into... More »

  • 2008 | Best Soul Food

Whenever we need a little bit o' soul to put us right, we head straight to a little place called Lo-Lo's, where the star dish is (no surprise) the best fried chicken and waffles we've ever tasted. Owner Larry "Lo-Lo" White is the grandson of the legendary Mrs. White (of Mrs. White's Golden Rule Café), so he grew up eating the best soul food in Phoenix. Now, he's dishing it up himself. And let us tell you, it's so good you'll hate yourself if you don't show up with gluttonous motives.... More »

  • 2007 | BEST RED VELVET CAKE

Check your guilt at the door. From buttery grits and mac 'n' cheese to the famous fried chicken served with a hot stack of waffles, everything at Lo-Lo's is stick-to-your-ribs delicious. So it only makes sense that dessert here would be a luscious affair, worth every calorie-laden bite. And, boy, does the red velvet cake deliver. One slice of this sweet, red-tinted chocolate cake -- slathered in buttery cream-cheese icing that we could just eat with a spoon -- is thick enough to feed... More »

  • 2006 | BEST BREAKFAST ALL DAY

So which came first, the chicken or the waffle? Don't matter much, really, 'cause Larry "Lo-Lo" White is cookin' 'em both up back in the kitchen. White's the grandson of Mrs. Elizabeth White, of Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe, and he's a grandson done good. Lo-Lo's take on L.A.'s famous Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles has become a Phoenix fave, but there's more to this soul-food palace than just the signature, nap-inducing dish. White also serves up some of the best scrambled eggs and grits,... More »

  • 2004 | BEST CHICKEN AND WAFFLES

We may be as agnostic as an ACLU weenie roast, but we have to give it up to that big beatnik in the sky and say a collective "God bless you" to Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles, the best thing to hit Phoenix since our pioneer forebears gave up eating beans seven days a week. Lo-Lo's is actually a riff off Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles in L.A., made famous by Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, but that's okay. Roscoe's is a riff off the chicken-and-waffles combo that Wells Restaurant in Harlem made... More »

It's the closest you can get to Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles -- a famous spot in L.A. It’s great soul food. I think their fried chicken is better than Roscoe's. It's kind of out of the way downtown. Definitely go with someone else because you’ll get lost.

And let us tell you, it's so good you'll hate yourself if you don't show up with gluttonous motives. From catfish and chicken gizzards smothered with gravy to collard greens, cheese grits, and candy sweets, this is the kind of down-home cooking you'll want to keep eating well after you're full. Sure, we'll understand if you eventually say you don't have room for another bite — ever. Still, the Sunny Sand's red velvet cake is just as famous as the chicken and waffles, and definitely worth a try. It might be torture to stuff yourself so much, but c'mon — it hurts so good.
