Description

The Living Room's bartender describes their clientele as "low-key" before explaining that Keane dropped by for a secret performance earlier that week; a month prior, Justin Timberlake stopped in for singer-songwriter Matt Morris's set. This sort of thing just happens around here, at an L.E.S. mainstay as casual as the name implies. Here, you'll find two acoustic performance areas: the back space (a cafe-table-cluttered dwelling of faded browns, oranges, and maroons) and Googie's Lounge (a tiny, milky-blue room with a white grand piano at its center). Both contain aspiring Norah Joneses.

Max Fish Will Move to Williamsburg

Not only does Brooklyn singer-songwriter Nick Loss-Eaton write richly detailed, sepia-toned tunes that layer America then and now atop one another like a ghostly palimpsest, he's just as handy at knocking out Johnny Cash-worthy trifles like... More »

  • 2009 | Best L.E.S. Spot for Balancing Seediness and Intimacy

The Lower East Side, generally, and Ludlow Street, specifically, is larded with tiny, nonchalant, painstakingly rough-hewn clubs usually so jam-packed that the mere act of turning 360 degrees is a 10-minute operation. Such is the price of culture. This is occasionally true at the folkie-centric Living Room as well, of course, but it's just slightly more comfortable and inviting--you're able to sit down, which helps make it probably the best-named club in the city. Often mashing in 10... More »

  • 2004 | Best sanctuary for your parents' banished rec-room lighting

Everybody likes a good rock light show, but it doesn't always have to be on the stage. If your mind wanders from the performance, you can always enjoy the retro lighting at the LIVING ROOM's latest space, the most impressive reliquary of Jetsons-geometry, wholly non-functional op-art chandeliers in one place in NYC. So even if you find your entertainment dollar poorly spent for the headliner, these flying-saucer-shaped flickers of another time can still make you feel you've seen the light. More »
