LeGrand's Market and Catering in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood serves meat. LeGrand's is a full-service, family-owned, neighborhood-friendly butcher shop. In addition to the cuts of roast, steak, chicken, pork and other meats, LeGrand's Market also offers a full array of deli sandwiches, served hot or cold, all stacked with meat cut by a real butcher. Their sandwiches, served on French bread, come in familiar stacks, such as the poorboy, Reuben, or a ham and Swiss, or in more creative combinations with a local tinge. "Stan the Man" comes with Krakow sausage, Gruyère, pickles and garlic cream cheese, and the "St. Louis Blues Special" is piled with roast beef, salami and chicken with onions, Havarti cheese, olive spread, and hot and creamy sauce. LeGrand's also barbecues every day, even in the winter.
Whether you're new to St. Louis or have lived here your whole life, you know there are some things you'll be ridiculed for if you haven't experienced. Never had Ted Drewes? What's wrong with you? Neve... More »
Deli loyalty in South City is no trivial matter. Which is better, Mom's (4412 Jamieson) or LeGrand's (4414 Donovan)? Debates are fierce. Feelings can get hurt. The always-impartial Gut Check will now ... More »
We'd be rich, but not too rich. And we wouldn't realize it until years later when we'd pass our handsome brick childhood home in St. Louis Hills and realize that it was big and we were privileged. If we grew up in St. Louis Hills, our parents... More »
LeGrand's Market, a deli, supermarket and sandwich shop, sells T-shirts that cite "22 Reasons Not to Be a Vegetarian" (there's one for each cut of beef). And they know how to put their lunchmeat where their mouth is. You can buy said lunchmeat by the pound or on a sandwich, or you can purchase a hunk o' something to take home and barbecue. We're partial to the "Legend Club" sandwich, which features turkey, pastrami, pepperoni and bacon, all tied together with red pepper sauce and an... More »
A homey little market housed in the shell of an old Tom Boy (remember them?) just off Chippewa in St. Louis Hills, LeGrand's strikes the first-time visitor as amazingly wholesome. Owner Joe LeGrand seems the kind of guy who says "okely-dokely-doo" without a hint of sarcasm. All the basics are available here, but we're here for the meat, which announces itself to the olfactory sense as soon as the bell jingles when you open the door. Service is quick, and typically only held up by a fellow... More »
Longtime St. Louis Hills residents still call the place Binder's, even though Jim and Joe LeGrand bought the store on Donovan more than fifteen years ago. Regardless of what they call it, they know that LeGrand's Tom-Boy Market is the place to go for meat. Beef ground fresh daily? Got it. The thickest, choicest steaks and chops around? Check. Their own brats that rival Wisconsin's best? Youbetcha! They'll even roast a pig for you, or slice your cold cuts as thin (or thick) as you please.... More »
Remember Sam the butcher from TV's Brady Bunch? He always put a little something extra in the bag for Alice. South St. Louis has its own version of the local butcher at Le Grand's Tom Boy and Catering. Behind an old-fashioned meat counter, the owners are ready to carve a 3-inch sirloin or slice up a pound of Boar's Head salami for customers. These butchers are quick, congenial and Rams-friendly. In South City neighborhoods, umpteen churches ask local businesses for charity donations on a... More »
