Description

Lee's is a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall serving up hot cheeseburgers and french fries. Grab a lunch to go or sit to enjoy a cheap and filling meal. This isn't a destination place, but it hits all the notes a small, appropriately informal burger joint should.

I attend the Emery/Weiner School, across the street from Lee's Burgers, so I have driven past the establishment literally every day for the foreseeable past. Only five years later, my senior year, did I finally work up the courage to eat there.

To be brutally honest, I had always been worried, as the restaurant does not have the best setting; nor the best atmosphere, and its parking lot is always empty. However, that never stopped my taste in hamburgers before.

One day last month, I went to lunch at Lee's. The restaurant was empty, and Lee personally greeted me upon my entrance. It had all of the little oddities of small businesses that I have always loved (only one refill, 50 cent surcharge on credit cards, etc) and the prices were very cheap. I get the same order I get from more or less any restaurant that serves hamburgers: plain and dry cheeseburger with fries and a doctor pepper. The price came out to about five and a half dollars, a full dollar cheaper than Whataburger.

I mention Whataburger because, for the middle class suburbanite like me, it is the standard which all other hamburgers are measured against. Good, but not the greatest burger ever. Lee's Burgers and More blew Whataburger out of the water.

The bread is thick enough to have a good grip, but soft enough to not hurt your teeth. The meat is good quality and the cheese is heavenly. The burger grows on you such that by the time you finish it, you want more. The fries are mediocre, but then again, it isn't called Lee's Fries.

As for the "and more", the menu seemed to insinuate they served Fried Shrimp and Fried Fish, two things I want to try very soon.

So if you are ever looking for a good, cheap lunch on Stella Link, go to Lee's Burgers. It reminded me to never judge a book by its cover.
