Hiking at its best isn't just about exercise and fresh air, it's also about escape -- the feeling that you've left the city behind and have immersed yourself in the natural world. True escape is hard to come by in the Twin Cities metro, but no place comes closer than Lebanon Hills Regional Park in Eagan. The park is huge: almost 2,000 acres, with 14 miles of heavily wooded trails wending around more than a dozen placid lakes and ponds. It's big enough to allow a genuine sense of... More »
It's nearing midday on a sparkling summer morning, and for three hours you've been hiking dirt trails through lovely, dense woods of oak and maple. In all that time you've hardly seen a soul, though earlier you startled a deer in a sun-dappled glen. Now, as you round a bend in the trail, you stumble across a placid, hidden pond nestled among the trees. The sunlight glistening on the water beckons you to rest, and as you unpack your lunch, you are serenaded by the birdsong of chickadee and... More »
Out among the hardwood tree stands and small lakes and ponds of Lebanon Hills, the wintertime trails are nicely groomed and, better yet, never crowded. Best of all is the sense of escape from the cities; houses and paved roads are rarely visible from anywhere in the park. Judging by its proximity to the airport, you'd think passing planes might trouble the tranquility, but we can't think of a single instance of jet noise messing with our ski-induced trance. There are trails for both the... More »
We don't have the knees to be graceful downhill-ski bunnies. But we can handle ourselves fairly well on cross-country trails. And a favorite spot for testing our elements is Lebanon Hills Regional Park, where miles of beginning, intermediate, and downright difficult trails can be accessed from trailheads at Jensen, Holland, and Shulze lakes. The latter spot is the busiest during the winter. We figure that's because it offers a warming house on weekends; there, clumsy folks can fumble around... More »
It's nearing midday on a sparkling summer morning, and for three hours you've been hiking dirt trails through lovely, dense woods of oak and maple. In all that time you've hardly seen a soul, though earlier you startled a deer in a sun-dappled glen. Now, as you round a bend in the trail, you stumble across a placid, hidden pond nestled among the trees. The sunlight glistening on the water beckons you to rest, and as you unpack your lunch, you are serenaded by the birdsong of chickadee and finch, and the rap of a downy woodpecker on the far shore. Where are you? A state park in the north woods? Nope. Eagan. It is scenes like this that make Lebanon Hills our choice for best park over perennial winner Como. For all of Como's charms—the zoo, conservatory, and even kiddie rides—Lebanon Hills offers something essential that Como never will: real nature, a sense of wildness, and genuine adventure. Lebanon Hills is more like a preserve than a public park, and with nearly 2,000 acres and more than 14 miles of trails, you can hike all day and never retrace your steps. Factor in activities like mountain biking, canoe and kayak rentals, a cute little family beach at Schulze Lake, superb cross-country skiing, and even campgrounds, and this dramatically underutilized park can't be beat.
