Named after a notorious Jewish gangster, newly opened Lansky's aims at being a classic Jewish deli, but also features a broad-ranging dinner menu that includes hamburgers, flounder "schnitzel," and foot-long deep-fried hot dogs with a dozen toppings. Sticking to the iconic deli items, we sampled the corned beef and the pastrami (both decent, but sliced way too thin) and the matzoh ball soup (rich saline broth, lighter-than-air matzoh balls). The piled-high sandwiches are a particularly good deal, and include pickles and cole slaw, but, with The Honeymooners beaming down from the monitor, swing jazz on the P.A., and a snowy haired clientele, you might feel like you're in a retirement home in Boca Raton. The problem with Lansky's is they have great food but really horrible service. Tonight "takes the cake". I order the 'Famous Lansky's' sandwich - it is, after all what they are known for, it is what I take to go all the time, but the waiter instead brings back some grilled cheddar cheese thing with a salad. When I challenge the waiter, he says "yeah it does look kinda small" and walks away!!! I have to go up and get a menu to verify that this is a different sandwich and then finally PROVE it was not correct. The manager was no better, it was like talking to a clueless vacant shell of a person. Even ordering to go they are completely incompetent and mess up all the time. It pains me as an Upper West Sider, you wish for this place to succeed, but its service is one of the worst around and for high priced sandwiches/food - it goes unmatched.
