A Ferris wheel, a train ride, a carousel, dancing fountains and tanks loaded with hundreds of fish -- what more could a kid ask for? This virtual theme park in the Downtown Theater District offers a whole afternoon of child-friendly thrills. Think of Landry's Downtown Aquarium as a good, centrally located alternative to Six Flags. The sound and smell effects inside the Aquarium's Amazon River and Mayan Temple attractions intrigue kids in a Disneyesque manner. And little ones can dine at boatlike tables and watch continuous movie clips in the informal downstairs restaurant. Thanks to the Landry's ownership, the food's not bad either. Popular items on the American/seafood menu include calamari, fish tacos and chicken lettuce wraps. And there’s a full bar for adults who feel like unwinding a bit after spending all day with the kids.

Had a pretty fun time at the Downtown Aquarium, but I did feel it was overpriced. My friend and I and our 14 year old sons spent a few hours there and ate lunch in the restaurant. The food was pricy, like $17+ per dinner item, but it was good. The atmosphere was nice, with the large aquariums in view while you dine. The waiter we had was exceptionally nice, though I may owe that to my single blonde friend who dined with me :) The aquarium part was nice, with the usual fish exhibits but also an octopus, sharks, large turtles, snakes, parrots and even white siberian tigers. We did the aquarium part as we waited for our table, since it was a 45 min wait. When we were done eating we went outside and with both boys refusing to ride the ferris wheel, the carousel or anything else, we managed to talk them into riding the train. It was a fun ride, going into an area where there were dozens of sharks swimming all around, including overhead. The wait for the train was long, but it was neat. A good time, but not cheap!
If you have a family and kids, this place is pretty cool. It's a restaurant with fun activities.
I went there recently for a wedding rehersal dinner. It was held in the upstairs banquet room which was really nice. The best part was the way they used the atmostphere to add a little something extra to the event. When I got off the elevator I was greeted by a scuba diver in a tank holding up a sign congratulating the soon to be married couple and pointing me in the right direction to the dinner. It was so different & cute!

Originally from the coral reefs of the Pacific, the Napoleon wrasse living in the confines of the Downtown Aquarium is truly a wonder to behold. He looks as if he'd like to strike up a conversation with you – and that he could formulate a good sentence with those huge lips, given the chance. There's a conscious awareness lurking behind his independently roving eyes, and a presence in his five-foot hulking form. The Aquarium's humphead wrasse is a male, indicated by the bump on his...
