This cafe, which must have once been a small Chinese carryout, is not the most comfortable place in the world, but the trans-Himalayan fare (Tibetan and Nepalese) is totally dope. Lali Guras is named for the national flower of Nepal, the red rhododendron, examples of which are spread around the premises, but it boasts only three tables. Highly recommended are the dumplings, called momos, the vegetarian thali (also available in a goat version), the noodles known as thenthuk, and the fried chicken wings (WTF?). For the daring, a few Chinese dishes adapted for Himalayan tastes grace the menu. The awning also offers Bhutanese food, but it's a bluff.
Nepalese continues to be a big deal in Jackson Heights, and there are a half-dozen cafés with an emphasis on various combos of Himalayan cuisines within the confines of the neighborhood. Lali Guras ("rhododendrons," the national symbol) is a truck stop of a place, picturesque and delicious.
