Dating to 1938, Lakewood Theater is a little piece of history right smack dab in the middle of Lakewood. Its red, green and blue neon sign soars 100 feet in the air, shining like a beacon for more than 60 years. The theater retains all of its original Art Deco charm, including just a single movie screen. In its past life it played host to some top artsy films, but these days you’re more likely to find a racy burlesque show hosted by a drag queen, a midnight screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show, live jazz or even a comedian. Forget popcorn or stale nachos -- Lakewood has a full bar so patrons can get their booze on while they get their burlesque on. Gin and tonic, anyone? In the summer of 2012, the iconic neon sign was destroyed by a wicked hail storm, but it was painstakingly restored to its original majesty thanks to plenty of support from the community.
Grease isn’t just a film (or a Broadway production, or a soundtrack) — it’s a rite of passage for us girls. Where so many teen movies relegate that preoccupation of the teen mind — sex — to subtext, in Grease it’s all right up front: If sweet... More »

The term “royal watcher” conjures up an image of a proper blue-haired lady with a chipper British accent and a doily collection dating back to the 1950s. It’s probably not the way you’d want to spend your Friday night, unless you prefer tea and... More »
When I was younger, I would go to movies here. Now they have events and concerts and it is 5 minutes from my house.
Dallas history preserved in a funky, old school theater. Great shows and staff.
Great vintage theater! Wonderful shows with friendly staff.
Cheapskate or nostalgic. Spendthrift or creative. Penny-pinching or innovative. No matter the motive--paying as little as possible on a date or looking for something out of the norm to do--the Lakewood Theater makes you look good. Movie tickets, depending on the night and the sponsor, cost a dollar or less. Popcorn also comes cheap. Drinks at the bar are on special. Basically, it's two tickets and two sets of snacks for less than the cost of a regular movie. Besides being budget-friendly,... More »
