There aren't a lot of boundaries being pushed at eateries in the tourist-heavy Canal Park in Duluth. However, the inventive menu at the Lake Avenue Cafe inspires even hours-long road trips. Their mac and cheese stuffed with pungent Taleggio and the chorizo stuffed dates wrapped in bacon are the antithesis of the other chain-restaurant foods to be found nearby. They also boast a fantastic wine list, craft beers, and the best craft cocktails in the Twin Ports.
Gray slate rock juts out of brilliant green grass overlooking majestic Lake Superior. Down by the water, just off the finish line for Grandma's Marathon, is an area mostly filled with mediocre restaurants. Although the Lake Avenue Café has been there for years, the young crew running the place is a relatively recent addition.
