Description

La Victoria owner Jaime Maldonado inherited this Mexican panaderĂa from his father. The establishment serves traditional pastries from south of the border, including the artfully crafted shell-shaped Conchita (made with Maldonado's dad's original recipe). Drink De La Paz coffee from a French press or sample the house Mexican coffee, perfectly seasoned with cinnamon and brown sugar. La Victoria rents out its kitchen to food-cart entrepreneurs like Soul Cocina (which occasionally hosts dinners there), and even slings some of its concoctions (i.e. Venga's empanadas and Wholesome Bakery's vegan pastries).

  • 2001 | Best Pan Dulce

Panaderías -- Mexican bakeries -- are located throughout the Mission, particularly along 24th Street, but La Victoria is a longtime favorite. Every panadería's specialty is pan dulce, delicately flavored, lightly textured rolls dusted with sugar and baked into whimsical shapes. At La Victoria they're crumbly on the outside, feathery within, and barely confectionery enough to earn the name "sweet breads" -- the perfect foil for a hot, frothy mug of Mexican chocolate, the...
