Description

This rollicking North Beach hangout serves up a limited array of Belgian specialties along with two hundred Old Country beers, most of them unique and delectable (try the bright, bracing Radermacher Rader Blonde). Notable edibles include a comforting bowl of chicken waterzooi (soupy stew), and steamed mussels with twice-cooked Belgian frites. Seductive subterranean setting.

Times are tough. It's pricey enough to drive anywhere these days, let alone get away for a foreign vacation. There is, however, a way to enjoy a slice of the Belgian countryside, today. Below ground. In North Beach. Welcome to La Trappe, your one-stop shop for a Belgian staycation. You might come for the house-made Belgian waffle or mussels cooked in beer, but you'll stay for the ambiance and brew selection. Once entering the restaurant, proceed directly to the staircase. Upon descending,... More »

  • 2009 | Best Belgian Beer Resource

Belgium produces the widest selection of unique, distinctive artisanal beers in the world -- as many as 800 varieties -- and a fine place to sample a remarkable percentage of them is La Trappe. Here, the questing suds-sipper can experience the breathtaking range of Belgian ingenuity and craftsmanship, from fruity ciderlike lambics and herb-scented wheat beers to the sweet and sour red andbrown ales of Flanders and those richly intoxicating top-fermented Trappist tripels. The place... More »

It's not entirely surprising that in a third-millennium universe of easily derailed attention spans and quickly consumed info-nibbles, the ancient cuisine of Belgium, jewel of the North Sea, should be reduced to beer, fries, and mayonnaise. While ... More »

This bar has a great atmosphere! You descend into the bar via a winding staircase and enter into a cavernous-like room. Beer lovers, rejoice! They have something like 250 beers in the bottle and about 15 rotating taps. The bartenders are very helpful and friendly- they will let you try before you buy, which is great. Every time I go, I try something new. I ask one of the bartenders for a suggestion, tell them what I'm in the mood for (dark, light, hoppy, etc) and they always serve up a winner. Great place!
