While you'd think sandwiches were the specialty of a restaurant with a name like La Torta Gorda, this repurposed lunch counter has another menu of regional dishes from Puebla state. The "especialidades poblanos" include antojitos like corn-tortilla quesadillas stuffed with squash blossoms and queso fresco, as well as tlacoyos, oval masa cakes stuffed with black beans and topped with fried eggs. There is a mole poblano, and it is a good one, fragrant with toasted chiles, cinnamon, and chocolate. La Torta Gorda's carnitas sandwich, with its press-toasted bread and pan-roasted pork, is rivaled only by its pambazo, a torta dipped in chile sauce and filled with chorizo and potatoes. Look for the squeeze bottle of chipotle salsa, and dab it onto everything.
