Miami is known for many things, but great bread is not among them, at least if you haven't tried La Provence's hearty, rustic artisanal breads. There's more than just bread, too, starting with a wide assortment of pastries, from light, flaky croissants to lovely little fruit tarts. More substantial fare includes a variety of panini on house-baked loaves, as well as quiches and empanadas. The prosciutto and mozzarella panini with pesto and tomatoes is generous and filling, as is a well-made salad niçoise with plenty of tuna and accouterments. Don't leave without at least one rustic sourdough baguette, which one day might get Miami known for great bread.
If great bread is the staff of life, all of us here in South Florida are living on borrowed time, eating mushy, pallid, tasteless loaves made from ultrarefined flour that no self-respecting Parisian or Italian would use for a doorstop. But man (and woman) doesn't live by bread alone, so if you're hungry for a light, flaky croissant; luscious Danish, fruit tart, or cheesecake; even savory quiches or empanadas, La Provence has you covered there too. Just no doorstops.

Miami has a great many things — sun, sand, spectacular ocean views, trolling celebutantes with more plastic parts than an Xbox. One thing Miami doesn't have much of is great bread. Sure, some of the upscale so-called gourmet markets do a... More »
