Miami is known for many things, but great bread is not among them, at least if you haven't tried La Provence's hearty, rustic artisanal breads. There's more than just bread, too, starting with a wide assortment of pastries, from light, flaky croissants to lovely little fruit tarts. More substantial fare includes a variety of panini on house-baked loaves, as well as quiches and empanadas. The prosciutto and mozzarella panini with pesto and tomatoes is generous and filling, as is a well-made salad niçoise with plenty of tuna and accouterments. Don't leave without at least one rustic sourdough baguette, which one day might get Miami known for great bread.

Miami has a great many things — sun, sand, spectacular ocean views, trolling celebutantes with more plastic parts than an Xbox. One thing Miami doesn't have much of is great bread. Sure, some of the upscale so-called gourmet markets do a... More »
I can't say I'm surprised the Florida Motor Vehicle Department rejected my suggestion to change state license plate tags to read "Land Of Mediocre Bakeries"; it is, after all, a lot of letters to fit on a plate. In retrospect maybe it would be... More »
If great bread is the staff of life, all of us here in South Florida are living on borrowed time, eating mushy, pallid, tasteless loaves made from ultrarefined flour that no self-respecting Parisian or Italian would use for a doorstop. But thankfully, for those special occasions, we have La Provence, where you can get a proper baguette ($2) or crusty loaf of sourdough ($2.25) or hunk of multigrain ($4.35). But man (and woman) doesn't live by bread alone, so if you're hungry for a light, flaky croissant; luscious Danish, fruit tart, or cheesecake; even savory quiches or empanadas, La Provence has you covered there too. Just no doorstops.

BEST CROISSANT La Provence 1627 Collins Avenue Miami Beach 305-538-2406 Although he wouldn't reveal the exact recipe, the key to a good croissant, says La Provence owner David Thau, is the way the baker works with the dough, which should always be cold. Also, all the ingredients have to be fresh and the butter real. The result is a croissant that isn't too huge (bigger croissants tend to be airier and mushier) and boasts the perfect ratio of flaky crispness on the outside and warm,... More »
