The food to order here is -- you guessed it -- tamales, albeit they are tamales of small stature. Among the permutations of filled and steamed corn masa are pork and jalapeƱo tamales and tamales with corn, pea and potatoes as well as some with beans. Unfortunately, all the orders must be to-go, as there is no interior seating at this small, storefront shop. There are, however, fresh tortillas, tortilla chips and salsa beyond the dozen tamales for a 10 spot. For those who believe there is no such thing as too much La Popular Tamale House -- and they do exist -- there is a satellite location in Shed No. 2 at the Dallas Farmers Market.
I'm an ideological sympathizer of the Slow Food movement (if I attach myself too closely, you'll all call me out on that dollar menu burger post from last week). Never-the-less, that's why we have Slo... More »
Don't be the pinche gringo who jacks up your Christmas Eve celebration. It's tamale ordering time, and while some places make a few extra bazillion to sell to all the assholes who don't call ahead, ot... More »
Christmas tamales are any kind of tamales you eat at Christmas. Long a Texas tradition, Christmas tamale-making used to be a family affair, called a tamalada. La Popular is a great place to buy... More »
Jesse Moreno and his family are among the few proprietors still producing truly handmade tamales in Dallas. They roast the pork, grind the corn, spread the masa harina de maiz (corn flour) by hand in the husks and cook the tamales themselves. The Morenos use all the best-quality ingredients, no lard, all vegetable oil. During the holiday season, La Popular is so popular, you have to call in your orders several hours in advance, maybe even a day. There's always lots of chitchat along the... More »
We took French in high school and regret it. Because while finding someone who speaks English at our favorite tamale shop is a hit-or-miss proposition, finding someone who speaks French is damn near impossible. No matter. We can usually hold up our fingers or clop our hooves to indicate how many beef, chicken and pork tamales we want. These are made fresh daily. Other fillings become available as they strike the proprietor's fancy. All are made by hand and steamed in corn husks to perfection. More »
