This hole-in-the-wall with a few blue Formica-topped tables and a few more seats at a counter is colorfully decorated with arts and crafts from Oaxaca, the centrally located Mexican state whose culinary specialties are served up in generous portions here. Along the unusual offerings are tlayudas, sometimes called "Mexican pizzas": huge tortillas grilled to a crisp and topped with refried beans, shredded lettuce, tomato, avocado, Oaxacan quesillo cheese, and your choice of about a dozen toppings, including cecina (spicy pork), lengua (tongue), carne asada, and tequila chicken. Better tacos are to be had elsewhere, and the baked goods look better than they taste. The hours (6 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily) are extremely useful.
La Oaxaqueña's hot chocolate is made from blocks of chocolate the owner, Albino Carreno, hauls back from Oaxaca City or Ocotlán on his regular sourcing trips. The 20-pound blocks of cacao de Oaxaca get pulverized in the kitchen, then mixed with ground almonds and cinnamon.
