Decent Tex-Mex may be as plentiful as traffic jams here in Houston, but when it comes to authentic Mexican tamales, one need look no further than 25-year-old La Mexicana in Montrose. Their homemade tamales are nothing short of spectacular. They always taste fresh and have generous doses of pepper and chile powder. And the casual atmosphere of the outdoor patio is also a nice change of pace from the eternally overcrowded new kids on the block.

You'll find old favorites like entomatadas here that are a rarity on more modern Tex-Mex menus, as well as huge weekend portions of soul-saving stuff like menudo and barbacoa breakfast tacos. If the line gets too long, seat yourself at the bar or grab some tacos to-go; they're made to order and always fresh. More »

Their homemade tamales are nothing short of spectacular. They always taste fresh and have generous doses of pepper and chile powder. Calling these "kinda spicy" is like calling Beyoncé Knowles "kinda hot": It all depends on your taste, son. The casual atmosphere of the outdoor patio is also a nice change of pace from... More »
Good Mexican-style food and good margaritas. This place plays great Mexican music too. And they sell dulce mexicano (Mexican candy) up front.
This place will make sure you won't go home hungry. They have a build your own taco bar with some much to choose from. Love this spot. Located in Montrose.
try the fideo with chicken. soooo good.
