Phoenix has too many Mexican restaurants to count, and you can pretty much throw a stick in any part of town and hit one (and then have the stick ricochet off the building to hit another). But most of it is cheap and greasy. While there’s a time and place for that (like 2:30 a.m. after the bars have closed), it’s also nice to enjoy a gourmet, not-like-your-mama-made Mexican meal. When you’re in the mood for upscale south-of-the-border fare, La Hacienda at the Fairmont in Scottsdale will do the trick. Not only is the food incredible, but it’s always on point and has been for over a decade. Everything on the menu has been crafted to reinterpret traditional dishes for a sophisticated contemporary salad. For example, a simple seared scallop is upgraded with crisp pork belly, blood orange glaze, pumpkin puree, and orange tomatillo demi-glace, and the rich flavor of chicken mole is rounded out by plantains, cilantro rice, and sesame seeds.
Summer in Phoenix means one thing: Everyone's pretending they're somewhere else. If you can't actually get out of town to escape the heat, make the most of the Valley of the Sun at one of these top h... More »
Mother's Day is on Sunday, May 12, this year -- that's about two weeks away -- and this is one occasion where you can't put off reserving a table (or special take-home dinner) until the last minute. W... More »
Turkey Day is only a week away. If you or your family have yet to begin making plans, it might be better to skip the homemade feast and book a table at a local restaurant. You'll be thankful for plent... More »
What made me think judging tacos would be a pleasant way to while away an afternoon? This is the question I asked myself -- about 12 tacos in -- at the Arizona Taco Festival held at Salt River Fields ... More »
The annual alcohol-fueled celebration of Cinco de Mayo takes place this coming weekend and it seems every restaurant and bar has some sort of fiesta planned for the occasion. While most Mexican joint... More »
A lot of hearts were broken when La Hacienda, the iconic fine-dining spot at the Fairmont, closed in 2008. But in January, the grand dame returned to the Valley scene looking refreshed and ready for another turn in the spotlight. This time, the restaurant has acclaimed executive chef Richard Sandoval -- a Mexico City native who's famous for his modern Mexican cuisine, with more than a dozen eateries around the world -- as well as chef de cuisine Forest Hamrick, who was with the... As the name implies, La Hacienda has the atmosphere of a traditional Mexican estate; the decor reminds us of Like Water for Chocolate. Roving musicians provide the background to a menu that reinvents classic Mexican cuisine. The appetizer menu includes a sampler plate, "antojitos mexicanos," which includes squash blossom quesadillas and crabmeat enchiladas, but do not miss La Hacienda's version of Puebla's chile en nogada -- ancho chile stuffed with roasted chicken and dried fruits, covered... For so long, "upscale" hasn't been a word associated with Mexican cuisine. Just this year, though, we've had several restaurants open, hoping to tap into a moneyed clientele who realize that Mexican is so much more than tacos, enchiladas and burros. But it's still that grande dame of south-of-the-border that wins our heart. La Hacienda even looks delicious. We imagine we're royalty, reigning over a Spanish Colonial estate in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains. The food is even better.... More »
When it comes to Mexican cuisine, we Phoenicians are so caliente we sizzle. We're home to the only Mexican-style restaurant in North America that's garnered both Mobil Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond ratings. Lounging like a Spanish Colonial estate against the McDowell Mountains, this place has class: low ceilings with dark wood beams, wood-framed windows, glowing fireplaces, Mexican folk art and luxurious brocade chairs. Strolling mariachis add romance, but we're here for the food. Luscious... More »
Don't expect to find any piñatas, colorful serapes or beer-touting sombreros here. This reproduction of a 19th-century Mexican ranch house is impeccably tasteful, down to the last carved, dark wood chair, white linen tablecloth and soaring silk flower arrangement. But the lavish decor is just visual garnish for the most upscale Mexican food the Valley has to offer. Chips? No way, José! Instead, opt for high-end appetizers, like pasteles de jaiba (plantain-crusted crab cakes with ch... More »
