Massimiliano Conti is on a mission to acquaint San Franciscans with the food of Sardinia, his home island. There's nothing superfluous in his Italian cooking, and it's just as season-specific as anything you'll find at Boulevard, but La Ciccia's food is rife with flavors most Californians have never encountered outside Europe. An ideal dinner here might start with a plate of Conti's housemade charcuterie, move on to tagliolini sauced with artichokes and bottarga (dried mullet roe), climax with a bowl of earthy, saffron-scented lamb stew, and wind down with a selection of Sardinian sheep and goat cheeses. The long, all-Italian wine list at this Glen Park restaurant includes a selection of indigenous classics, such as tart, fruity Vermentino and soft, aromatic Cannonau (Grenache), as well as rare bottles and older vintages from other regions.

Italian influences have become so much a part of California cuisine that it's almost impossible for a San Franciscan to distinguish the two. Is Incanto's nettle risotto "Italian"? How about Acquerello's stuffed guinea hen? Delfina's wild fennel sausage with lentils? No diss on these great restaurants, but La Ciccia stands out for the love its Sardinian chef showers on the food of his people. Massimiliano Conti's food is exciting because it's so distinctive -- fava beans roasted whole... More »
