Pay no attention to the Euro-sounding name: The West Village’s La Bonbonniere is essentially a classic American diner. Its menu is of the endless type found in spots that haven’t been susceptible to the current trend of paring down to just the best, and maybe that’s for good reason: It’s difficult to find the best at La Bonbonniere because it’s all pretty good. The blueberry pancakes are sweet, the bacon is crispy, and the “famous” French toast is fine (though maybe not fame-worthy). Even the toast is good, and the coffee goes down better than most diner swill. The laid back atmosphere sometimes invites chaos. No reservations and seat-yourself service plus a prime spot in the West Village adds up to a fairly hectic brunch rush, but it’s worth it for a greasy spoon, no-fuss, unassuming breakfast. --Shane Barnes

Breakfasts there are superb, including eggs perfectly cooked to order, toast that pops out of the toaster on command, and sausages and bacon served up unstintingly. Really, the only thing French about this place is the French toast. ... More »
Those first peculiar moments in the morning are best examined through blurred vision. Where am I? Who is that? Does the general citizenry misplace its underpants, too? Such are the communiqués of a hangover. The perils of four scotch-and-sodas (universal euphemism for "lobotomy") the night before. Mortification is likely pending, so it's advisable to seek fortitude through grease. Tramps and 'hos recommend the LA BONBONNIERE diner. Order two buttery egg-and-cheese sandwiches with... More »
For hundreds of years, LA BONBONNIERE has been serving the breakfast needs of Villagers, though there's nothing French about it but the name. A diner-style breakfast menu features sunny-side-up eggs, sodden but tasty bacon, griddle cakes, and French toast (oops! another French thing). The biggest decision: white or whole-wheat toast. On fine days, the tables spill out onto the sidewalk, and the aroma drifts northward toward Chelsea. More »
