What does it take to be hip these days? Not long ago it was a mullet, a PBR tallboy, and a pair of tapered jeans. But after a few visits to Kings Wine Bar in southwest Minneapolis, it seems the new standard-bearers are sporting a glass of red wine, a 55419 zip code, and an infant wearing a onesie over a long-sleeved T-shirt. It's about time that Kingfield had a real neighborhood hangout and King's seems to be just that: it's a café, a wine bar, a coffee shop, and a lounge. It even has its very own book club. Chef Pete Maccaroni, previously of the Sample Room offers a menu of local, seasonal New American cuisine. The homemade tater tots may attract the most attention, but the real stars are the value-priced dinner entrées, which stand up to those at more upscale eateries.

When deciding on a restaurant for a first date, selecting a spot with the right vibe is crucial. Fortunately, Kings Wine Bar strikes the perfect balance necessary for sparks to fly. This is especially true in the evenings, when the lights dim and the candles flicker while patrons sip from glasses of wine and pints of beer. Sit at the bar or a tiny table for two, or get cozy in the back, where there are a few mod chairs to choose from. Prefer to do brunch? If the weather is warm, the outdoor... More »
Though the conventional nibble on the side of a bold glass of red might be a wedge of manchego or some Sicilian olives, Kings Wine Bar makes a convincing case that tater tots also make for a pretty great coupling. (And if you really can't budge on the cheese thing, it should be noted that the tots come with a gorgonzola-bacon sauce for dipping.) Settle in at the bar for small plates and half or whole pours of over 20 wines by the glass (in every varietal and from all over the globe, usually... More »
We hesitate to call Kings simply a wine bar; its beer and sake lists are pretty unusual and thoughtful as well. But the wine list is truly epic. The back wall is packed with wine like a library's with books. You can order by the glass, but we recommend drinking with friends by the bottle. And while wine lists can be intimidating price-wise for some, we think you'll easily find something in your range. They have fun wines like La Playa Cabernet from Chile ($18), intriguing bottles such as... More »
