CLOSED - Located in an old, colorful house on the northwestern edge of downtown, this funky restaurant and bar has been around since 1984. The multilevel dining room and large outdoor patio feature one of the best views of the Houston skyline. The menu is an eclectic mix of dishes such as baked brie, shrimp and poblano quesadillas, Thai salad, burgers, meatball sandwiches and blackened catfish. Daily specials, like a red curry hot pot and blackened red fish, round out the offerings. There's also a great wine and beer list.

Jazz clubs usually bring to mind dim lights, linen tablecloths and softly clinking martini glasses, not to mention steep cover charges and/or pricey two-drink minimums. Houston has plenty of those places. But jazz has another side -- a spontaneous, free-swinging and earthy one -- and there's no better place to see this than King Biscuit's no-cover Tuesday-night jam sessions. Some of Houston's best players descend on the homey Heights bar and cafe not for the money (but please tip),... More »
