Ever had a pina colada in a Thai young coconut? How about a cucumber martini infused with fresh Thai basil? If those don't sound like the standard beverages in your neighborhood Thai joint, that's because the King & I is the neighborhood Thai joint for the hipsters and power brokers of downtown Minneapolis and Loring Park. Other points of difference include the physical size--it's a spreading complex full of statuary and Thai artwork, ever-ready to host big events--a DJ in the lounge after 10:00 p.m., a pretty outdoor patio in the summer, valet parking, and, most of all, a menu and service staff equally at home dealing with either Thai newbies or connoisseurs.
Early Saturday afternoon brought about the beginning of the end of an era as downtown Minneapolis's premier Thai-themed bar and restaurant, King and I Thai, announced it would be shutting its doors af... More »

The King and I Thai's Bloody "Hot" Mary is not for beginners. True to its name, it's one of the only bloodies in the Twin Cities that requires no extra hot sauce. In fact, that would only ruin the masterpiece, like putting ketchup on a fine steak. But the King and I's bloody is more than just heat. The brilliance of this drink comes in its complicated flavor, an unusual combination of Thai chile, roasted garlic, and basil. It also comes complete with a full meal's worth of garnishes. So if... In some ways, our ideas about romantic dining are a little baffling. Sitting at a table with a starched white tablecloth, fearing the moment you might drop a fork, just isn't very libidinous. Feeling comfortable is romantic, and so is putting a flower from your drink in your hair. And what could be more sensual than the scent of lemongrass, Thai basil, and red coconut milk rising up from your food? How about shamelessly feeding your honey a steamy bite of pad Thai or an icy passion-fruit... More »
Sometimes when we nosh at this reborn Minneapolis treasure, we take our server's advice and order the gaeng (or curry) of the day, and are presented--as we knew we would be--with a complex and multilayered dish of meats, seafood, or tofu; vegetables; fresh, aromatic herbs; and a sauce redolent with spicy or rich seasonings to bind the whole thing together. And we've dabbled in the portion of the menu devised by Chef Chavhivan "Bou" Haanpaa and her husband Gary Haanpaa entitled "classic... More »
If you like spicy food and you like great wine this place is for you. The mood is very peaceful, they keep the lights dim, I love this place. HIGHLY recommended. Ask for the spice rack and if you like red wine, I recommend the Chateau Eugenie "Tradition" Malbec - France 2004
Great food. Good DJs in the Bar.
Even though the drinks are a little spendy and the Thai food isn't anything to talk about (I work at Chai's Thai on Cedar) they have great service and a relaxing bar for after work!
