The restaurant is an intimate space with Western-style booths made private (and romantic) with the bead strings along the perimeter of the dining room. In the center, traditional woven basket tables and stools are replaced with more Western seating. Fortunately, one thing retains authenticity. Utensils are eschewed. Diners eat by picking up food with spongy injera bread. The menu is short, emphasizing classic Ethiopian dishes like kifto, raw (or lightly sautéed) beef. Kereje is an oft-overlooked family-owned restaurant among the handful of Ethiopian eateries in Dallas. It might not help that it?s located in a dilapidated shopping center and below street level. Perhaps that is why a certain local celebrity chef stated Dallas doesn't have any Ethiopian restaurants.

Ok... sincerely. I was a bitttt skeptical at first. Sincerely. I didn't want to try the meat, but I did order the Vegetarian Combo. Wooww... delicious. I'm going to set this up for you. I'm a bit illiterate of the culture, so don't fault my description(s). They bring the food to you on this circle platter. In the center are fresh grill tomatoes, onions, and jalapeno peppers... fresh peppers. Around the platter is collard greens (seasoned better than my grandma's), peas (which I think is really corn -- smashed kinda and warm... but the good warm), cabbage (yellow, not sure why it wasn't green!), and some other foreign sauces... and another scoop of something that I'm not sure what it was. Also, your utensil is a soft bread... kinda like tortilla, but its alot softer and tears easier (Dallas Observer's writer said it was injera, the traditional Ethiopian flatbread). Break a piece off and scoop the serving portions!!! People... if you want something different, go to Kereje. No joke. If you like fresh vegi's, I promise you will not be let down. I'm still surprised, but I will definitely go back. I'll see you there.
