You can't go wrong with a salad plate with chopped liver or egg salad, a stack of fresh rye bread and some pickles at Katz's Deli in Montrose, especially late at night. The Reuben sandwich is their specialty.
Good: Fried pickles. Hours.
Not so good: Service.
This place is soooo good! I love Katz's. They have great sandwiches and their catering is awesome!
It says a lot about the sheer number of restaurants in Houston, I think, that I live 1.9 miles from Katz's Deli on Westheimer, and went for the very first time just a couple of months ago. (I've lived... More »
I think I found the most overpriced, underwhelming drink in town. Enticed by the "2 for $10" deals offered in celebration of Katz's tenth anniversary, I went there for a discounted sandwich and some ... More »
True, the sign outside the restaurant that "never kloses" on Westheimer says that Katz's has been around since 1979, but the deli in Montrose is celebrating 10 years in Houston this weekend with a big... More »
When I went to Katz's this past weekend, I knew I would get the onion rings, not because they're particularly amazing but because I had been craving fried batter. The more challenging decision was wh... More »
Let's start with the buns here. Katz's uses a rich, yellow, brioche-style bun to hold an all-beef wiener that snaps when you bite it. Katz's is always open, so you can satisfy your hot dog craving whenever you want. And lucky for us, it's also a bar. You can wash down your pickles with an assortment of... More »
Rude waiters who keep forgetting the pickles, obnoxious drunks at the bar and lousy, overpriced sandwiches -- is this an authentic New York deli, or what? We always order a salad plate with chopped liver or egg salad, a stack of fresh rye bread and some pickles -- and then we make our own sandwiches. It's hard to mess up that order. "Katz's never kloses," as the slogan goes and, thanks to the Montrose location, you can see an extremely wide cross-section of humanity there at three o'clock in... More »
Houston's hankering for international status took a subtle stride when the crazy Katz's crew branched out from Austin. World-class credentials will ever be debated, but one indisputable definition is that a particular urban area must have a full-service, round-the-clock deli to dish up quality cuisine when the yen strikes. The Bayou City now has it. While other delis in the area may outdo Katz's in selected specialties, the father-son team of Marc and Barry Katz is right on target with an... More »
