If you like assembling entire meals from small plates, then sake bar Kasadela is your place. Begin with a bowl of the enchanting black edamame ("They taste like butter," blurted out the waitress), then proceed to the delectable chicken wings, then, perhaps, some Japanese potato salad, which one-ups the American variety by being crunchier and having more mayo. There is the inevitable portion of miso-soaked black cod, but even better is the salty and slightly charred mackerel. Only the rock shrimp donburi over rice bombed; it was too damn sweet.

Japanese establishments continue to proliferate in the East Village, especially sake bars. Our hands-down favorite is still Alphabet City's quaint little izakaya Kasadela-- izakaya being the name for a traditional Japanese bar specializing in sake and snacks. Most of the appetizer-y tapas-portioned yummies are cheap, but it takes a lot to get a meal's worth.
