This unpretentious, old-fashioned bakery has been around since the 1960s, and bagels share the spotlight with fresh breads, rows of pastries, and piles of cookies. While Karsh's doesn't boil its bagels before baking them, it does use kosher ingredients to create firm, golden bagels with more character than the ubiquitous chain varieties. There's no seating here, so grab a baker's dozen to go.

It's hilarious and pathetic to recall my notion of a bagel when I was a kid: rock-hard frozen rolls, usually six to a bag, that needed to be nuked or toasted to be edible. To actually be palatable, they needed to soak up a good slathering of... More »
These days, you can find bagels and challah and maybe even a decent rye bread at plenty of neighborhood grocery stores, but Karsh's Bakery still makes the best, using all kosher ingredients, the way they've been doing since the '60s. This bakery's almost like a time capsule, an old school, no-bells-and-whistles storefront where the display cases are packed with mouthwatering breads, rolls, and pastries, including rugalach and black-and-white cookies that bring customers from miles around. Looking for a special occasion cake? Karsh's does those too, from traditional wedding and birthday cakes to specialty designs shaped like animals, toys, and even Louis Vuitton handbags.
Dave is right, best eclairs I've ever had. They also did an amazing job on my wedding cake. My husband has a dairy allergy and this cake was so good, you didn't miss the dairy!
The eclairs here are not to be believed, they are so good. Don't bother with the little mini ones, get the large size. The minis are made of the same stuff as the big ones, but the ratios aren't quite the same. The big ones, however, are the perfect blend of pastry, chocolate, and filling. Call first to make sure they have them on any given day, they tend to sell out fast. Karsh's other baked goods are good, but man... those eclairs!

Whenever we walk into Karsh's, we immediately think of Jerry Seinfeld. Partly because the place feels more Manhattan than Phoenix, but also because they have the best black-and-white cookies this side of NYC. (And if you don't remember that episode, you better start catching up on the ubiquitous Seinfeld reruns. That show's on more than Sex and the City.)Ah, but we digress. This is all about the rugelach, the mondel bread, the doughy hamantaschen with thick, sweet poppyseed filling. Karsh's... More »
If you walk into a Valley bakery and ask for mandel bread (instead of biscotti) or challah (rather than egg bread), some folks around here might think you're a little meshugana. But not the staff at Karsh's. They've run the Jewish bakery in town for decades, providing the city with rugalach, bagels and onion rolls. You can get the best black-and-white cookie around at Karsh's, and they'll even bake you a wedding cake or a birthday cake with your mug on it. Without official rabbinical... More »
