Cuban bakeries are a dime a dozen in this city, but good ones are few and far between. Karla Bakery, which has three locations that serve your pastelito needs, began as a mami y papi operation but expanded to supply demand. Everything at Karla's tastes good - from the croquetas to the sandwiches to the dulces. And unlike "gourmet" Cuban bakeries - ahem, Gilbert's - Karla's doesn't pick your pocket as you sip on a cafécito. Savor the taste and price of sandwiches such as a media noche ($3.30) or Cuban ($4.30). Both are made with ham, Swiss cheese, and roasted pork, served on different kinds of bread. And at those prices, you'll want to add a few croquetas ($0.75), an empanada ($1.00 - $1.85), or a papa rellena ($1.25) to your meal. Whichever location you choose, you can expect friendly service, clean surroundings, and (possibly) political discourse.
