Description

Kanomwan was one of the first restaurants to introduce Thai food to Houston, and it's still serving the same terrifically spicy curries from its East End home decades later. Although the infamous owner — so-called "Thai Nazi" Darawan Charoenrat — passed away in 2010, the Charoenrat family still honors his legacy by making some of the best green curry and tom ka gai in town. Other customer favorites include the deep-fried pork toasts, the tom yum goong and the pad panang. Although the kitchen will adjust the spice level for you, beware: If you ask them to go extra-spicy, you may not be prepared for the fireworks that follow. And remember to BYOB if you come, because nothing cures the burn of spicy Thai food like a cold, hoppy beer.

  • 2007 | Best Thai Restaurant

Kanomwan has a cult following that speaks for itself. Sometimes the people who eat here communicate with each other using menu item numbers like a secret code. They also insist that the owner puts an addictive substance in the food that keeps them coming back at least once a week. There's a healthy dose of heat in just about everything, but the kitchen will happily make things spicier for you -- at your own peril. The owner tends to have a wicked sense of humor when customers mess with... More »
