Description

Tucked away on one of St. Louis' most picturesque street corners, Kaldi's quaintly cramped shopfront ain't much bigger than a bread box -- yet its menu is almost as broad as what you'd find at a truck-stop diner. You could actually put together a little three-course meal: Start with the soup of the day, a salad or a shared order of black-bean nachos; move on to a stuffed croissant or grilled cheese; then polish it all off with a slice of pie. Kaldi's roasts its own coffee beans, so if you're too stuffed to even consider a cup of joe, take some home with you. See listing for additional locations under "Webster/Kirkwood" and "West County."

Wanna know what makes Kaldi's coffee so delicious Go to the source. Actually you don't have to go to the source, because Kaldi's already has. The local coffeehouse chain offers two "Relationship" coffees: Over the past few years, Kaldi's buyers have forged relationships with farmers in Ethiopia (the Koke cooperative) and Costa Rica (Helsar de Zarcero) to pay a fair price for coffee grown in an environmentally sustainable manner. Oh, and did we mention delicious This is serious coffee, with... More »

  • 2010 | Best Place to Meet Single Women

The Kaldi's Coffeehouse on DeMun Avenue isn't a typical coffeehouse. It isn't even a typical Kaldi's. There is no Wi-Fi here, nor are there outlets for your laptop. This is a coffeehouse to enjoy a latte while you read a book -- remember them -- or watch your dog gambol in the park across the street. It is, above all else, a place to be social -- to talk with friends or to make new ones. In other words, it is the perfect spot to meet a woman. Not, mind you, a place to score... More »

The line doesn't lie. It winds awkwardly around the front room of Kaldi's, squeezed tight with irritable junkies. They hold monogrammed mugs, and their minds race with crackhead chatter: "oh lord hurry hurry hurry what's taking so long so I think this morning it'll be a double shot with a splash of 2-percent no wait maybe a straight double ooh that person has a mocha maybe this morning is a mocha morning." The oft-interminable line is no freak of nature. Kaldi's makes a consistently great... More »

  • 2003 | Best Smoothie

Really, all you do to make a smoothie is dump some fruit and some juice into a blender, then press the magic button. It's not that hard and takes maybe five minutes tops. But then, there's the flavor-combination factor -- and this is where Kaldi's reigns supreme: They know what fruit works with what juice and when to add some yogurt and whatnot. They're a bit pricey -- $3.85 for a small, $4.85 for a large -- but you have to pay for quality. Try an Oranga Tangy (orange, raspberry and banana,... More »

  • 2002 | Best Place to Conjure Your Spirit Animal

The night is cold. You sweep into Kaldi's and close the door behind you, sealing out the frigid winter. Breathlessly, you order it: the white-chocolate cocoa. You wait several minutes, pacing, looking around at nothing, needing the fix. It is ready. You take the hot glass. You make your way past the students and trendoids to your corner. You take off your coat, sit and, for just a second, wait. Savor the moment. Now, take your first sip. Heaven -- pure heaven. This is so unbelievably good,... More »

  • 2000 | Best Place to Buy Coffee

Kaldi's, a one-of-a-kind coffeehouse in the DeMun neighborhood, roasts its own coffee daily at a location at 21st Street and Washington Avenue downtown -- and what a difference it makes! Bring a pound home, whole-bean or ground, and you may end up lingering near the pot for hours. Owners Howard Learner and Suzanne Langlois (a former RFT staff writer) opened this cafe in 1994, and there's something here for every kind of java junkie, with varieties like Guatemala Huehuetango, Ethiopia Sidamo...
