This highly ornate restaurant, named after Kalachandji, an ancient Hindu deity once considered the "Supreme Personality of Godhead," is the oldest vegetarian eatery in Dallas. Situated in a center of worship founded by Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the chefs here practice what they claim is the Ayurvedic art of cooking for the body, mind and spirit. Walking into Kalachandji's is much like walking into a palace and temple complex on the Subcontinent. There are murals, richly carved wood and meticulously executed, gleaming tile, plush seating and a multi-tiered courtyard. It's no surprise that diners and patrons are often left in awe before and after time spent eating a wide array of India's vegetarian fare, as well as the lunch or dinner buffet. An experience here also leaves many wishing to duplicate the dishes at home. For that, the restaurant offers cooking classes.

Kalachandji's, the beloved East Dallas Hare Krishna temple and eatery, finds its way onto our list year after year. We're boring, we know. But we'll never tire of sitting in their beautiful garden patio, eating dal and vegetable curry and drinking tamarind tea. And after a fire in another part of the building closed the kitchen for a few days, we're relieved to see the restaurant open and unscathed. No matter how busy the lunch hour, the atmosphere here is always as meditative and peaceful... More »
When you tire of listening to your teenage cousin who's just discovered factory farming yammer on and on at Christmas dinner about how meat is murder (when you know he'll be best buds with Oscar Meyer again come baseball season), recharge at Kalachandji's, the East Dallas Hare Krishna palace with the best vegetarian buffet in town. Kalachandji's isn't about self-righteous posturing and tacky PETA protests. They're vegetarian because it's their freaking religion, which means they're invested... More »
