This stand-alone restaurant could do with some updating and cleaning, but the food is downright glorious. Just Oxtails serves down-to-earth soul food, and lots of it. The menu changes daily but, as you might imagine, the wonderful oxtails are featured every day. Other dishes include excellent smothered pork chops, ham hocks and chitterlings, and all are served with homemade corn muffins and three typical sides, like collard or mustard greens, yams, rice, beans or corn. The homemade coconut cake is just like Mom used to make.
We generally don't see a lot of soul-food restaurant commercials. You've got the freakin' Mandola's every two seconds, but soul-food joints generally earn their rep through word-of-mouth, not blitzkrieg broadcasting. But owner Kenneth Washington's commercial is pretty much what you'd expect a soul-food commercial to be: a dude talking about how good his restaurant's food is while showing video of said food. Washington even mentions his famous "40-weight gravy," which sounds vaguely like his gravy might be used for industrial purposes, but probably tastes amazing. This is a homegrown, no-nonsense spot — and it makes you want to check out this funky-sounding joint in, as Washington proclaims, "the heart of Sunnyside, Texas."
Just like grandma used to make. Go oxtails are hard to find, but Huey are never wrong at Just Oxtails. The price is right too.
Ok so it's not on the beaten path and you might have to drive out of your way if you don't already live near the place, but it's worth it. Staff was friendly and the food was great, only flaw I found which might have just been an issue on our visit date, the steam table was not turned up high enough so while the food was warm it was not hot. However the food was GREAT!

Just Oxtails Soul Food is modestly named and modestly situated in a corrugated metal building next to a church and a biker bar. It easily lives up to its name, offering divine oxtails, which are tender and drenched in an addictive, slightly sweet gravy. But that's not the only reason the line inside stretches ten deep late into the afternoon. The menu also features smothered chicken, smothered pork chops, meat loaf and meatballs, as well as eight sides. Every plate is delicious. The thick... More »
