It's a "Privilege to Pee" is this unexpected Broadway hit about a dystopia where water is so scarce that you have to pay to use the bathroom.
After a successful run of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Jungle in 2011, you could wonder what director John Command would do for an encore. He's going to Urinetown.Related Stori... More »
It's tough to talk about Deathtrap without giving away the thriller's many secrets."It's a play about two men writing a play... about two men writing a play... about two men writing a play," says Stev... More »
Rationality might be a guiding principle in respectable society, but history has repeatedly shown that high-minded virtues seldom subdue deep-seated vices. A scan of our cultural landscape will yield no shortage of salacious details pulled from... More »

Event Review: Venus in Fur
I saw this play last Sunday and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did, however, feel like I needed a cold shower afterward. The two characters were very easy on the eyes and there were sections in which the sexual tension was so think you could cut it with a knife. I recommend this play, even to the prudes among us. There was plenty of fun moments. A very memorable event.
Harold Pinter plays are often oblique, brutal, and savagely funny affairs. They are also notoriously difficult to stage, as the Nobel Prize-winning playwright leaves nearly as much out of the dialogue as in. Actors are pushed hard, but the results can be absolutely bracing. The six performers in The Birthday Party at the Jungle Theater -- Stephen Cartmell, Claudia Wilkens, Richard Ooms, Tony Papenfuss, Martin Ruben, and Katie Guentzel -- spun the material into a fine evening... The Jungle has always been a home for great stage design, often from the fertile minds of founder Bain Boehlke and John Donohue. Joel Sass took the reigns of the theater in 2009 while Boehlke was away on sabbatical and showed that his own considerable talents stretched to design as well. His work through the season proved that past efforts (including beautiful work on Shining City, K-2, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch) were not flukes. Sets ranged from the natural realism of Mary's Wedding to... More »
Size is in the eye of the beholder. While not the largest theater in the Twin Cities, the Jungle is easily one of the most ambitious, providing a steady stream of well-staged and -imagined productions. Last year was a particularly banner one for the Jungle--including two of the year's best productions, The Syringa Tree (back for another run in July) and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The Jungle's success isn't just about the acting onstage, it's found in every piece of the theater's... More »
The Jungle staged Steven Dietz's Vietnam hangover with a fine mix of pain and cutting humor, drawing obvious parallels to our current national situation without leaning too hard on the obvious. The show revolved around Ben (Stephen D'Ambrose) and Jeeter (Terry Hempleman), two war buddies hanging out at Ben's place in an abandoned trailer park. (Joel Sass's ornately ramshackle set design was powerful enough to make you taste dust in the back of your throat.) Jeeter arrived from Ben's father's... More »
There's no shortage of deserving recipients of this honor, but the Jungle deserves singling out for its deftly directed treatments of new and rarely seen material. As always, artistic director Bain Boehlke delivered his painstakingly crafted sets, chose excellent plays, and attracted some of the finest actors in town. This year, he also opened the door to visiting directors, including Casey Stangl and exciting new-kid-in-town Bryan Bevell. Last fall the theater presented Hapgood, an... More »
