Ribs: Think of them as meat lollipops thick with tangy barbecue sauce, tender from being lovingly slow-smoked over pecan logs, and served up with mac 'n' cheese, sweet corn, coleslaw, and/or any of a number of other sides. At least, that's how you'll be chowin' down on Porky Pig at Joe's, unless you prefer your hog flesh pulled, or as ham or hot links. And if you're not fine with the swine, Joe's has beef brisket, chicken and turkey breast, too. Set in a large, historic building with a restored 1948 John Deere tractor and a mural commemorating Gilbert's agricultural heritage. Great for family outings.
The only thing we like more than barbecue from Joe's Real BBQ is free barbecue from Joe's Real BBQ. And just our luck, it's once again time to celebrate the restaurants Customer Appreciation Day on We... More »

One of my favorite things about joe's is the red cream soda! I don't know why it being red makes it better...but it does! The food is also great, fun country-like atmosphere right in the middle of downtown Gilbert
It's not the primo location on Gilbert Road that keeps us coming back to Joe's Real BBQ. It's not the old-fashioned charm of this 1929 building, decorated with '40s-era Arizona ephemera, or even the dapper style of hat-loving founder Joe Johnston, who's become a local foodie icon. As much as we'd like to say there's something unfair about the appeal of this place, our love for Joe's all comes down to the scrumptious food -- and, in particular, the impeccable pulled pork. Heady with the... More »
To walk into Joe's Real BBQ, right in the middle of downtown Gilbert, you'd think you'd stepped right back in time to the 1940s. The building itself, all gorgeous red brick, was constructed in 1929 as a Safeway Pay'n'Takit (ah, they just don't make 'em like they used to), while the restored John Deere tractor in the middle of the dining room is an authentic '40s relic. And just like an old-fashioned cafeteria, you grab a tray and get in line to order up plates of slow-cooked meats smoked... More »
Maybe it's the affordable housing prices or the constant sunshine that attracts transplants from all over the globe, but whatever the reason, Phoenix has become the melting pot of the Southwest. It's rare to find a native Phoenician and even rarer to find one like restaurateur Joe Johnston, who manages to make even the newest desert dweller feel at home in his trio of Gilbert restaurants: Joe's Real BBQ, Liberty Market, and Joe's Farm Grill.Johnston grew up in the slump block ranch that... You never know when a good idea may strike. For Joe Johnston, inspiration struck on his frequent business trips to Texas, where he sampled the goods at every barbecue joint he stumbled upon. By the time he found the perfect spot to open a barbecue restaurant in his hometown -- a 1929 brick building in downtown Gilbert -- he'd already perfected his business plan. And now Joe's Real BBQ stands as a testament to all the good grub he had in the Lone Star State, hawking the best barbecue... More »
Just in case you forgot, spareribs are not supposed to be health food. And no, that white stuff on 'em that tastes so good is not granola. That's pork fat. Each hunk you suck off that rib bone is equal to a pack of unfiltered Camels and is sure to slice 365 days off your life span. Okay, we're exaggerating, but you get the point. Still, what would ribs be without a little gristle on 'em? They wouldn't be ribs from Joe's Real BBQ in Gilbert, and they wouldn't make you want to lick your dining... More »
What's more way-out West than barbecue beans? No self-respecting cowboy, after all, could make a meal without his trusty sidekick of beans. But they've got to be real beans -- not that canned, bright-orange stuff ladled out at tourist traps. They've got to be treated with respect, as they are at Joe's. Here, the side dish salutes kidney, lima and navy beans, thickened with shards of cooked-on-site sausage, chicken and beef. Insist on sopping up every last bit with Joe's terrific caraway... More »
