Joe Grotto (yes, his real name) has provided a North Phoenix haven for local bands for more than a decade now with his bar and live music venue. Be they fire-breathing death metal artists, long-haired screamo types, costumed tribute acts, or just plain old hard rockers, Joe will always offer space on his stage. Two weekly open mic nights also draw all sorts of new blood to the joint consistently. The interior looks the way an old-school rock club should, with one wall covered in mirrors, spots of graffiti here and there, and various fliers clinging to the walls.

Imagine taking a demonic ride through a girl's mind, filled with fantastic illusions, haunting, heavy melodies, and vengeance against a world that has forgotten her. To get there, you could spend an... More »
It's been a long time since the music industry had musicians' best interests in mind. And it's not just the greed of the industry; it's the fans, too. I'm not talking about the multimillionaires in Metallica. I'm talking about the underground... More »
Usually, people move from places like the middle of nowhere to big industry cities like New York and Los Angeles to find musical success, and stay there. Not the other way around. But for former Gun... More »
We're lucky in the Valley of the Sun. There are plenty of hole-in-the-wall venues, which, in most enthusiasts' opinion, are the best places to see a great show. Especially when it comes to hard rock a... More »
Mesa's reggae/punk outfit Authority Zero has come a long way over the course of its nearly two-decade career. The band quickly moved up from intimate (often free) local shows to playing Warped Tour an... More »
Transplant from Alabama. Folks, most other cities across the country, even larger ones, don't have anything even close to Joe's Grotto. It is such a great place to go and listen to new rock/metal music and talent. Saw EPICA perform there, it was beyond amazing! I've met the owner and can say first hand he is a gentleman and truly helps new bands by giving them a venue to show their stuff! Mark my words, Joe seeds future talent. Oh, and don't think those people besides you in a black tshirts and earings are just metalsheads...they might just be an executive, a doctor, a lawyer, a janitor...just saying the common theme is a love of live music and this place delivers in spades!
Oh, and IMHO the bar staff rocks and have always been great to me!
Thieves! Don't ever use your credit card in this bar. They will let anyone walking up to the bar say your name and charge drinks on your tab. Not only that, but they will add a tip onto the bill after you have left.
This long-standing north Phoenix rock club got a new, state-of-the-art sound system in the past year, allowing for concert-hall sound in a small room. Owner Joe Grotto has been booking bands that know how to take full advantage of a sonic boom, from the manic rockers of -itis to the brutal metal of Hellen to the roaring blues guitar of Carvin Jones. The Grotto has been hosting more all-ages shows in the past several months, and Joe Grotto recently relaxed his covers policy (bands used to be required to incorporate a certain percentage of cover songs into their sets). Now the club hosts more original music than any other club on the north side and packs the house on weekends. It's bumpin' on weeknights, too, as the pool and dart tournaments at Joe's — combined with such drink specials as $1.50 domestic longnecks — attract plenty of people looking for a friendly, good-time vibe.

One might assume that Joe Grotto is a bit pompous, given that he named his north Valley speakeasy after himself. But after you encounter the friendly and down-to-earth owner (if you can manage to flag him down as he eagerly interacts with customers, that is), you'll discover how appearances can often be deceiving. The same goes for Joe's drinking establishment. Tucked into a nondescript corner of a quiet strip mall, Joe's is actually a rockin' bar and hot music spot. Grotto enthusiastically... More »
