It's designed to remind a New Yorker of home. And Jerry's Famous Deli - South Beach's giant 24-hour joint renowned for Patrick Ewing-tall pastrami sandwiches - succeeds in that regard. Of course, the price of that seven-inch "Pastrami Sky High" sandwich, which comes topped with gooey Swiss and partnered with terrific peppery coleslaw, is also reminiscent of the Big Apple - a whopping $17.95. But you're paying for location, as well as convenience: Jerry's is open 24/7, and every item on the hefty menu is at least solid. The soups are a must, especially the matzo ball, which, with baseball-size mounds of dough jutting from a golden bog of noodles and translucent carrot slices, will instantly teleport you to your bubbe's kitchen. Also notable are the picturesque tuna salad melt (get it with the crunchy onion rings), the burgers (even the large-grain veggie variety is good), and the crusty cod fish and chips. A plus for hungry late-night lushes: There's a full bar, so you can cancel out the pesky alcohol-absorbing effects of carb-heavy dishes.

Despite its being located in the former and famed Warsaw nightclub, you don't have to arrive in a limo to gain entrance to Jerry's. And while you waltz in, valets will somehow find a place to park your beat-up Honda Civic, even at 2:00 a.m. on weekend nights (when there are no such places) for five bucks, which entitles you to two and a half hours in Jerry's. Which you will need, even if you order just a sandwich. Yeah, we've heard the beefing about Jerry's high prices, but you know what?... More »
