While Jay's serves a solid cheesesteak (along with burgers, chicken sandwiches, and other informal eats), the restaurant is curiously best known for its meatless, seitan-based alternative to the beefy, Cheez Whiz-sauced standard, along with an array of delectable fried sides like mushrooms, zucchini, and onion rings. Inside, the restaurant consists of just a few stools and tables. As well as beer goes with a cheesesteak - whether real steak or seitan - Jay's serves no alcohol.
We understand that meat substitutes, crusty French rolls, and absence of Cheez Whiz won't jibe with cheesesteak purists, and that Swiss cheese (instead of American cheese or provolone) is considered improper among Philly connoisseurs. Thanks to Jay's, "vegetarian cheesesteak" is no longer an oxymoron.
