There are newer restaurants in LoDo, as well as restaurants with more unusual selections on their board. But still, Jax has become a kind of comfort restaurant for fish-obsessed carnivores. The oft-changed menu cycles between merely good and phenomenal, with the best plates on the best nights ranking among the best in the city. And while the bar is often the scene of crushing crowds during prime time, a quiet moment in the dining room with a plate of oysters or scallops can be worth all the waiting in the world.
In January, there's often a shake-out in the dining scene. But while twenty new restaurants opened in metro Denver last month, including Corner House with chef Matt Selby at the helm, there were relat... More »
Jax Fish House opened in LoDo -- in the space once home to the legendary Terminal Bar -- sixteen years ago. In bar time, that could be a century ago, and so Jax closed at the end of service on New Yea... More »
Too busy to get to everything on Cafe Society's plate this week? Here's another helping of some of our entrees: Gretchen Kurtz reviewed Early Bird Restaurant in Westminster. Here's the capsule versio... More »
Parisi Italian Market, 4401 Tennyson Street, closed over the weekend for renovations. The space is set to open in "plenty of time for Valentine's Day"; check the restaurant's website for updates. And... More »
While the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy continues to swamp the Northeast, several Denver restaurants are doing their bit to help provide aid. Jax Fish House will be hosting a weekend scallop special fe... More »
There's now a trio of Jax Fish Houses -- and a fourth opening soon in Glendale -- but the newly remodeled LoDo location is the front-runner stunner. The nautically funky interior showcases whale-tail cutouts suspended from the ceiling, white subway tile, a gorgeous marble-finished bar that stretches from one end to the other, and an interactive raw bar, from which fresh oysters, clams, shrimp, mussels and crab legs are dispensed by a crew of seaworthy captains who can shuck, peel,... Many bars in this town turn out balanced drinks, but the team of bartenders at Denver's Jax Fish House exhibits a different kind of equilibrium. The restaurant employs a complementary cadre of professionals with varying skills. Some lend deep, geeky spirits knowledge to the list, contributing housemade sodas, knowledge of the classics and inventive mixology wizardry. Others have perfected the true art of tending bar; they're expert conversationalists and endlessly entertaining -- and... More »
This LoDo shrine to aquatics -- thankfully bereft of any Disneyland-under-the-sea nonsense -- is quite a catch for crab cakes, catfish and calamari, paddlefish and luxurious caviar, as well as a lovely raw bar glistening with oysters, the true benchmark of a seafood restaurant. Purists will insist that fresh oysters need no adulteration; dispense with the cocktail sauce and the Mignonette, they'll demand, and for chrissakes, never, ever cook them, they'll tell you, shuddering at... Colorado beef grilled up a perfect mid-rare, topped with white cheddar, on a soft, grilled brioche roll and sided by hand-cut fries. A great seafood restaurant has no business making such a great burger. It seems wrong, almost greedy. But there it is: Chef Sheila Lucero and her crew at Jax make a burger that can stand proudly among the best in town. More »
When we walk into Jax, the LoDo outpost of a fish house that got its start in Boulder, we still get a twinge of nostalgia for the old Terminal Bar that once occupied this building. But after ten years, Jax has proven itself more than see-worthy. And the great horseshoe-shaped bar -- a holdover from the Terminal days -- is one of the main reasons why. Settle onto a stool here, and you can order up a plate of oysters or the best burger you're ever going to find in a seafood... More »
If restaurateur, chef and culinary man-about-town Dave Query has a signature spot that captures the evolution of his empire, it's Jax in LoDo. Here, in a retooling of the original Boulder fish house, Query's vision and his attempts to meld the upscale with the down-home come together most smoothly. From the brick walls sketched with graffiti to the big horseshoe bar, from the seating crammed in every which way on the floor to the butcher's paper on the tables, Jax exudes a feeling of casual... Sunday through Thursday nights, Jax Fish House features "blue-plate specials" that fit the mood of the day. On Mondays, that means fish 'n' chips; Tuesday is Wash Day, cleaning the kitchen out of shrimp and beans and rice. But Sunday dinner is our favorite meal at Jax, because that day's offering is steak 'n' eggs Benny, a serious version of the breakfast classic that takes tender-on-the-inside, blackened-on-the-outside sirloin steak and blue crabcakes and piles them onto cornbread slices,...
