Any place in town can broil an acceptable filet mignon, but Suzanne Tracht's snazzy steak house is a blast from the Mad Men '60s, chefly riffs on the strip steak and the porterhouse, the hash brown and the french fry that may or may not incorporate every last pea tendril and star-anise infusion in the Asian-fusion playbook. Some people we know have never even tried the steak here - the glorious pot roast and the various and sundry wonders of the duck-fried rice are just too compelling. But the steak is about as good as it gets. The décor is straight off the set of a Cary Grant movie. And there's always banana cream pie for dessert.

In this era of gastropubs and fusion bistros, it comes as a welcome relief to enter a place that still calls itself a "chophouse," as does Suzanne Tracht's 11-year-old West Hollywood restaurant, Jar. The moniker is a signal to other beautifully atavistic traits: a maitre d' in a suit and tie, white tablecloths, an iceberg wedge on the menu, a playlist of Sinatra and Armstrong and Nina Simone -- and some of the best steaks in Los Angeles. Not only will your dry-aged Kansas City steak or... More »
Delightful, charming, playfully luscious -- and since I am so in love with this dessert, I'm not ashamed to say it truly made me swoon. The acclaimed butterscotch pudding at Jar really doesn't need any more fanfare -- and it knows it, the way it sits so smug and haughty in its rather cafeteria-style rocks glass; you're forgiven if you think it looks like dorm food. The pudding is pure butterscotch bliss, with whipped cream and a salty caramel sauce that provide textural and taste... More »
