Pleasantly anachronous, this jazz joint seems almost out of place in the loud, smoky, midriff-bearing scene that is Miami's trademark. Heavy drapes, dim lights, and cozy booths make for a perfect date destination. Live jazz bands perform most nights, setting the mood without making it impossible to hear the person next to you.

Don't be fooled by the name of this establishment. Back in 2001, it was known as Jake's Bar and Grill, a deliberately dim, plush place across the street from Sunset Place that offered a pool table and killer steak at a great price. Now they've lost the "and grill." This might give a passerby the impression that Jake's is nothing more than a typical bar, with customers lined three deep clamoring for drinks, and walls bedecked with flat-screen TV sets. A big, sturdy mahogany bar, handsome wood interiors, and Diana Krall on the sound system lends Jake's a New York ambiance. Or the wide-open space of the place, the booths along one wall, and a pool table can make you think Old Florida. Whatever.
