Nearly every Irvine Chinatown visitor eventually waddles into this clean, well-lit bakery/boba shop seeking a sugar capper to the day: bite-sized red-bean cookies, taro pastries, tart egg pudding, and a bizarre bread slice that contains half a mango covered with cream cheese. But the main reason you should haunt J.J. Bakery is for its prepackaged sandwiches, a sort of regal Hot Pockets that, at $1.55, is the best lunch option since the three-tacos-for-a-buck special at Jack in the Box.
Here's a bakery that does it all and does it well. The petite cakes are topped with fresh fruit or layered with ganache; neither too sweet nor too rich. The fried bread is stuffed with breaded pork cutlets, and the white bread loafs have their crusts already removed.
